I spent a lot of time to practise my pronunciation when I started learning English.
How long you should spend on it depends on how you feel about it. You should ask yourself when you read aloud a word: does it sound right to you? how does it compare with the stardard?
When you are comfortable with the pronunciation, then you can move forward to later steps.
My English improved dramatically when I was learning in the UK, particularly at the University. I made very little progress in China because I didn't have time to practise it and I didn't have the environment. I am able to improve my English in China if I go to the English Corner every week.
The reason that my English improved fast at uni was that I started to watch TV in English, and I stay with international friends most of the time, almost all the time.
