Profile Reading offers a high-quality education with a mixture of traditional and vocational disciplines for 9,000 full and part-time undergraduates. Students can live on campus for at least one year, in often modern halls of residence or self-catering apartments. They have access to fine sports facilities, mostly contained within the 320-acre Whiteknights campus. The students' union has had £1.5m of recent investment resulting in a new nightclub and three more bars. Teacher trainees are mostly based at a second campus, Bulmershe Court.
Politics and classics have joined the 16 teaching subjects given top marks before this year. Seven subjects, including agriculture, American studies, molecular and organismal biosciences, building and business all missed out on excellence by a single point.

The new research assessments saw four subjects achieve the highest 5 rating, including archeology, psychology, English, Italian and environmental science — for which Reading is renowned. It has one of the few meteorology degrees in Britain and close links with the Met Office in nearby Bracknell. Reading misses its target recruitment levels from state schools by 4%, the lowest social classes by 5%, and deprived areas by 3%. Criticised by the funding council, it now runs residential programmes, mentoring schemes, and guaranteed-offer arrangements with a number of schools to diversify its intake.

Open day September 28.

Student view Ed Crockett, president of the students' union:

Best feature Our campus is amazingly beautiful every season.

Worst feature Hall food.

Social life The union is the place to go.

USP More than 40% of students live on campus so it's one big melting pot, and it works.

Rated excellent (18) Archeology; classics and ancient history; communication and media (typography and graphic design); drama, dance and cinematics; environmental studies (meteorology and soil science); food science; geography; geology; history of art, architecture and design; mathematics, statistics and operational research; mechanical engineering; nursing; philosophy; physics and astronomy; politics; psychology; sociology; town and country planning and landscape (with land and property management).
