Breakfast is known as the most important meal of the day, and with people leading busier lives than ever, with less time to lunch, breakfast has never been so crucial. From the continental breakfast of croissants and pains aux chocolat to a full English breakfast, the ultimate breakfast comes in many forms. MSN Sainsbury's Food and Drinks explores some of the UK's most unique and memorable breakfast venues - is there one near you?
1. The Wolseley

If ever there was a London breakfast institution, this was it. The imposing, bustling all-day brasserie opens its doors at 7am and serves a breakfast so revered, even famously acerbic Sunday Times restaurant critic AA Gill has written a book about it (Breakfast at The Wolseley, published by Quadrille). Formerly a car showroom and then a Barclays Bank, the gloriously grandiose grade II listed building which is situated on one of London's best-known boulevards, Piccadilly, has been serving over 1,000 covers a day since 2003. Classics from the breakfast menu include omelette Arnold Bennett, buttered crumpets with preserves and double chocolate brioche.

Not many places can lay claim to being "the original home of the Gut Buster" - but then, they don't all come like Market Diner in Brighton. The all-night cafe is a local institution - a favourite among clubbers and lorry-drivers alike, and serves up tummy teasers like steak, eggs, mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, peas and chips, along with the legendary Gut Buster: eggs, bacon, mushrooms, burger, black pudding, fried toast, beans, chips and tomatoes. If you've got an appetite that's not easily sated, and you're a fan of the fried breakfast - this is a must-visit for you.

Tasked with the hefty job of filling up many of the local fisherman of Dartmouth of a morning, Cafe Alf Rescos (Alfs to you and me) in south Devon knows how to lay on a whopping good breakfast. Using local ingredients freshly prepared, the buzzing cafe offers breakfast classics such as scrambled egg and smoked salmon on toast, croissants and toasties, but it's the hearty full English that steals the show. Local organic fruit juices and very good coffee help wash the whole thing down.

Whether it's turning Blue Nun into bubbly, or attempting to reinvent spam, everyone's favourite bespectacled chef Heston Blumenthal has a penchant for reviving naff British culinary traditions. Earlier this year, the super chef did his thing for the UK's most nostalgic roadside restaurant chain when he revamped the food offering at the Little Chef in Popham for a television documentary. Working his three-Michelin starred magic on the menu, Blumenthal transformed the sludgy breakfasts of yesteryear into carefully sourced, neatly-executed dishes like the smoked Scottish kippers served with a chargrilled tomato and a slice of toasted bloomer bread. The poshed-up menu, which includes such produce as Wiltshire-cured, outdoor bred back bacon and Ramsay of Carluke black pudding, is being rolled out at the York and Kettering sites too.

With its often-deserted expanse of pebble beach, the small but charming Kentish coastal town of Deal might be the last place you'd expect to find a mammoth, globally-influenced breakfast menu. But that's exactly what you'll get at The Malvern guest house, which boasts more than 60 variations on the most important meal of the day. Whether it's a burger-based breakfast you're after, a Manx kipper or two, or a fancy-pants champagne breakfast, you'll find it at the Malvern, where owner Derek Barnes has been crafting the menu for years. Listing everything from the classic full English, to a Fisherman's pan fry and an Indian breakfast, this small but characterful guest-house is a must-visit for all breakfast fans.

The Doors' eminent lyric, "girl, we couldn't get much higher" springs to mind for this London breakfast hotspot. Paramount, which has only recently opened to the public after years as a private member's club, serves the capital's highest breakfast at 385 feet on the 32nd floor of Centre Point. Enjoy a full English, boiled egg with soldiers or crunchy granola with natural yoghurt as you gaze out at the sprawling metropolis of the big smoke.
