How do things work? As a child I opened a scientific calculator with a screwdriver and looked at the structure inside.
I was fascinated by the graphite-like substance on the little piece of transparent plastic. For this reason Mathematics and Physics have always been my favourite subjects, and Electrical and Electronic Engineering, which combines Mathematics and Physics, will allow me to study both of them at the same time.

The development of electricity and electronics has revolutionised our lives at school, at work and at play; television sets, computers and mobile phones have become essential for almost every family. Thinking about the future, I would like to join in the activities that can change society and make life easier. I want to work in a ever-changing environment, where I can continue to learn about new technologies and areas of knowledge. Electrical and Electronic Engineering offers me this way forward.

I love studying Mathematics and won two gold and several silver awards in the Mathematics Olympiad Challenge in China. In the UK I attended the Mathematics Challenge and received a gold award, and at the national Mathematics Olympiad I got through to the second round. Choosing to study A level Further Mathematics was therefore an obvious choice for me. In AS Further Maths, I have found trigonometry the most interesting subject; we compared sine and cosine graphs and I enjoyed the moment of understanding why sine differentiates to cosine.

I also obtained a gold award in the Physics Challenge in China and will be taking part in the UK Physics Olympiad. In AS Physics, I gain great pleasure from calculating electrical circuits, and in my spare time I enjoy reading books such as Setting Up Electrical Circuits Correctly. I have also studied Kennelly’s Star-Delta Transformati##被过滤## via the internet and enjoy researching ideas independently.

As a member of the Physics Olympiad team in middle school in China, I realised the importance of teamwork. A successful community can only be formed when every member does their job and co-operates well. In middle school, I was chosen by classmates as monitor, which is a very important role in China. My work included helping the teacher to organise the school life of the class, which gave me the ability to manage others at a very young age.

My other interests are playing sport and reading. I enjoy reading science fiction such as Neil Gaiman’s American Gods, Isaac Asimov’s I, Robot and H.G. Wells’s The Time Machine. I play tennis every weekend to keep fit. I stumbled recently into the world of chess when I came to the UK and I really enjoy the social life it offers. I have also learnt archery and juggling at after school clubs, which has helped me to develop different sides of my personality, as well as enhance my English skills. I am currently studying GCSE English and am confident that I will have obtained the qualification by 2008.

Before I start a higher education degree, I want to take a gap year as part of the Year In Industry scheme. I hope to be employed in the field of Electronic Engineering and gain more experience of how the subject works in real life. As well as offering invaluable work experience, this scheme will then provide a real focus to my studies in higher education when I return to full-time learning.

I am excited about the prospect of learning about Electrical and Electronic Engineering at undergraduate level. I have travelled a long way to be part of the British education system, and I know that I still have a long way to travel intellectually to achieve my goals in life. It is a journey that I look forward to.
