About installing Linux

Happy Chinese new year, happy the year of RAT.
Today I have been contacted by a friend of ours on installing the mighty Operating System Linux. I am very glad about that because my aim is to help other people particularly our Chinese people to launch Linux if I can. The reason for using Linux is that the system is yours, you have no restriction on controlling the system.
Secondly you don't need to be illegal any more, because you use free open source software. 3rdly, you don't need to pay for the system and software. 4thly it is the root of innovation expecailly for computer science people. 5thly the system is safer ,more stable and faster than windows.
So any one can contact me about Linux, and i will try my best to give you advice and help you to install the system.

that is good. my favorite linux distribution is ubuntu and that is completely free. you can order the cd or download the images from the following link.

please note that it is a live cd which means that you can use the system without installing it.

I helped a friend to install Linux on his computer yesterday, it was really easy, everything worked instantly after installation.

it is ok. but please make sure that all the devices are supported by the system, especially the wireless connection. if that is a standerized laptop, such as a thinkpad, 3rd part drivers won't be needed. otherwise, you may need other drivers.

True, wireless connection is always the hard bit. You need to get the right driver installed. Some versi##被过滤## of Linux Kernels have a lot of peripheral drivers included, if you can't make the wireless connection working, you need to compile a kernel that has the wireless driver. Or use 3rd party drivers or compile the driver yourself.

I use ubuntu 7.10 on my laptop. After I installed it, the wireless was automatically working well.
Have you tried to run gentoo or lfs? Compile a whole linux from scratch...... very exciting....

cool, I don't know what gentoo or Ifs are, could you introduce them to me? Compile a Linux kernel took me more than 2 hours, because my laptop is very slow. I am using Xubuntu 6.06, this summer I will go back to China to hopefully get a Loongson2F laptop, I will switch to Debian.

I had another success story on fixing a Linux problem last week.
My friend installed Ubuntu 7.10, but the wireless didn't work and he asked 4 people to help him but still could not fix the problem.
Then I went to help him, and it worked not after long, and both of us were really excited about the fix.  This type of wireless related problem is very rare, however with so many manufacturers, you bound to have a few of them don't support Linux manually.
I am happy to help people to install Linux or fix their problems if I can.
You can pick up Linux quite easily these days because it is almost as easy as windows now, even the "hard" stuff you can master after some time.
I started to switch to Linux on 25th of October 2007,  not long ago, I am already doing my developments on this platform.
The reason I am so keen no this is because it is truly  the 21st century operating system and it is for our next generation.  Another strong point is that the China's home grown CPU Loongson supports only Linux, so to express my full support of my own country's CPU, I start to do every computing related things under Linux.
