I am very pleased to write the introduction to this book which I hope will help many students who want to study abroad. Students have many reas##被过滤## for studying abroad and for most of them it is an exciting and extremely valuable experience. But there are real financial and practical difficulties in undertaking undergraduate or postgraduate study abroad and the better prepared you are the more you will benefit from your period of study abroad. The advice contained in this book will help you understand better what is involved and guide you through the process of application.
But as well as all the practical things to sort out it is easy to forget that there can be differences in the approach to education when you study abroad. I believe that education is an organic process in which teacher and student should be engaged in a voyage of discovery. Education involves more than the teacher giving you knowledge which you learn. Education involves finding evidence for your judgements, making connecti##被过滤## between ideas and professional practices and establishing why what you have learnt is important. The teacher will introduce new material, suggest new methods and guide your writing. But, in British universities, students are encouraged to learn how to take control of their own work, to reflect on what and how they have been learning and to develop their own understanding and approach. This is certainly true of postgraduate work but it is also a feature of many undergraduate programmes.
In addition, you will learn much from being in a different culture. Education takes place in class rooms through lectures and discussi##被过滤## with the teacher. But it also takes place in discussi##被过滤## with other students, in informal conversati##被过滤## with people outside the education system and in the different cultural experiences you get when you travel.
It can be hard for students, wherever they come from, to approach their own learning in this active and engaged way. I met Ming Liu when he studied at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, UK. We talked about what he had studied before and the ideas which he wanted to pursue. What impressed me was that he was able to reflect on what he had learned and to understand the ways in which his approach to learning had been changed by his experiences of doing postgraduate study. This means he is in a good position to give you a flavour of what it is like to study abroad.
I am sure that this book will give you practical advice from the inside about what you need to know when you want to study outside China and in the UK in particular.
