TRAVELLING TO LANCASTER
The Introductory Week information asks you to arrive on Saturday 27th September or Sunday 28th September 2003. Please refer to the handbook Pre Arrival Information for International Students for full details about arriving in Britain and getting to Lancaster .
From Heathrow or Gatwick
By Shuttle It is possible to fly from Gatwick or Heathrow to Manchester Airport using internal domestic flights. There are regular flights throughout the day starting at about 0700 hours with the last flight leaving at about 2030 hours with fares starting at about £54 inclusive. For more, and up-to-date, information visit the British Airways (BA) website at www.britishairways.com and look for flight timetables.
If you decide to travel by train it is not always necessary to go to London. You can often get a train from the airport to Lancaster, involving a change of train at some station on the way. Please ask at the British Rail Information Desk when you get to the Airport or check out the British Rail (www.nationalrail.co.uk) before you leave. You may find that the train journey is longer but easier because you don’t have to travel through London. Please compare the cost of travel too.
From London. There are several large railway stati##被过滤## in London and you need to be at Euston station to get a connection for Lancaster. There are direct trains from Euston to Lancaster and these run at regular intervals during the day, although there are fewer on Sundays. The last direct train leaves at about 1900hrs on Saturdays and 1830hrs on Sundays. You can get up-to-date timetables from the British Rail (BR) website at www.nationalrail.co.uk go to ‘planning my journey’ and enter ‘London, Euston’. You can also check with the British Rail Information Desk at the airport. There are other trains departing from London but catching one of these would mean changing trains at least once on the way to Lancaster. You should ask for details at the Ticket Booking Office at Euston station.
From Manchester Airport
By Train. There are regular direct trains from Manchester Airport Rail Station (near to Terminal 1) to Lancaster Railway station on Saturday 27th September, and a less frequent service on Sunday 28th September.
The Railway Station. It is not difficult to find the railway station from the airport, you should ask for directi##被过滤## at the Information Desk in the Arrivals Hall. The train journey to Lancaster takes about 1½ hours and there is a regular service throughout the days, though you should note that there are fewer trains on Sunday. The last direct train leaves at about 2135hrs on Saturday and 1945hrs on Sunday. You should check on the exact times on arrival at Manchester airport station or on the National Rail website given above.
There is a bus service running at approx. 30 minutes intervals from Lancaster train station to the
University on 27th September. On 28th September the bus service will operate in conjunction with train arrival times at Lancaster train station. The ticket cost is approx £1.00 and the buses will circulate the perimeter road of the University dropping students at the avenues nearest to their college
Lancaster University Student Support Coach Service
There will be University coach transport from Terminal 1, International Arrivals, at Manchester Airport direct to the University. If you wish to make use of this transport, there will be a charge of £15, which you should pay when you get on the coach. A representative from Lancaster University will be at Terminal 1, International Arrivals, at Manchester Airport from about 0800 hours on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th September. We anticipate that there will be 4 coaches each day leaving the airport. The timing of these coaches will depend on the flight arrival times, so you may have to wait, but we will endeavour to keep this to a short a time as possible.
