Canals and Railways运河和铁路  During the 19th century, the construction of an extensive canal system and the arrival the railways triggered a boom in population. This was when Birmingham became the second largest population centre in England. In 1889 Queen Victoria granted Brume with city status and in 1900 it established its first university.
  Today the canals have been redeveloped as leisure areas; Brindle place and The Mailbox are two such developments with restaurants and designer stores alongside office buildings and apartments.
