Nottingham academic wins Nobel Prize
PA122/03 — October 6 2003

A respected physicist at The University of Nottingham has been awarded a Nobel Prize for his continuing research into one of the most important breakthroughs in medical science.

Sir Peter Mansfield —the first Nottingham academic to receive such an accolade — has been awarded the 2003 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work in the application of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to medical diagnosis - a breakthrough now recognized to be comparable with the discovery of x-rays.

The award has been bestowed upon Sir Peter jointly with US researcher Professor Paul Lauterbur, also an international leader in the field of MRI.

The University of Nottingham's Vice-Chancellor Sir Colin Campbell said: "I am absolutely delighted that Sir Peter Mansfield has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine. MRI has had a revolutionary impact on medicine throughout the world. This award is tes##被过滤##ent to Sir Peter's pioneering work.

"I am proud that one of the University's leading, internationally-renowned researchers has received the highest accolade in medical science."

The School of Physics at the University of Nottingham was a well-established and internationally-recognized centre of excellence for nuclear magnetic resonance when the development of magnetic resonance imaging began there after Sir Peter became a professor within the department in 1979.

Within a decade, this process of using magnetic field gradients to provide spatial information, had revolutionized the world of diagnostic medicine.

MRI is now a routine method within medical diagnostics and more than 60 million investigati##被过滤## using the technique are performed worldwide every year. It is often superior to other imaging techniques and has significantly improved diagnostics in many diseases. MRI has replaced several invasive modes of examination and has thereby reduced the risk and discomfort for many patients.

The importance of the work being carried out by Sir Peter and his team led to the University founding a Magnetic Resonance Centre in 1991 - recently renamed the Sir Peter Mansfield Magnetic Resonance Centre. Now led by Professor Peter Morris, the centre is the largest physics-based academic MR group in the world.
