越来越多的学生选择美术、艺术设计、护理、教育、信息技术等此类专业,而越来越少的学生申请读经济学和建筑学。下表摘自Time Online也列出了十大申请学位增加的院校以及十大热门专业的推荐,供学生们参考: There seem to be an endless stream of stories about universities, applicati##被过滤## and funding cuts at the moment. Indeed, we have heard about record rises in applicati##被过滤## this year.
But what’s the story behind the headlines? Who is applying for these extra places, and what subjects are they hoping to study? Perhaps more importantly, is it all bad news? The Good University Guide’s John O’Leary explains, after these tables:
Universities: top ten increases in degree applicati##被过滤## Applicati##被过滤## Change University of the Arts London 22,829 112.2%

“Anyone hoping to go to university this year could be forgiven for a bout of despondency after this week’s applicati##被过滤## figures. A 22 per cent increase is truly extraordinary – especially after a big rise last year – but it does not mean all courses will be that much more competitive. In particular, the most selective courses may not be affected as much as the less popular opti##被过滤##.
For once, the squeeze looks like being in the lower reaches of the league tables. That may well be bad news for the Government’s attempts to widen participation in higher education because those are the universities with the most students from working-class families. But no doubt ministers knew that when they cut the number of places on offer.
Nearly half of the additional applicants (about 46,000 of the 106,000 increase) have reapplied after failing to secure a place last summer. By definition, most of them will be making less ambitious applicati##被过滤##. Many of the others are mature students, who tend to be tied to a locality and are found disproportionately at new universities. And even the extra school-leavers are likely to be at the lower end of the ability range because most of those with high grades were already heading for university.
As a result, some of the universities at the top of the tree have hardly any more applicants than last year – less at Bristol and the London School of Economics. But a number of the new universities will be raising their entry standards and reluctantly turning away far more applicants than usual. Thames Valley University has had an 86 per cent increase in applicati##被过滤## and Edinburgh Napier 78 per cent. Middle##被过滤##, the West of Scotland, De Montfort and Robert Gordon universities are all up by more than 50 per cent on last year.
The same goes, to some extent, for subjects. The biggest rises of all, in art and design, are to do with a change in deadline and will probably even out over the coming months. But while there has been a 75 per cent increase in applicati##被过滤## to nursing degrees (fuelled by the impending withdrawal of the diploma option) fewer students have applied to read economics and classics. Increases of 6 per cent for law and around 8 per cent for English and history would be significant in any other year, but are modest when the average rise is 22 per cent.
University applicati##被过滤## are often over interpreted. A slight swing towards a few vocational subjects is taken as a panic resp##被过滤##e to rising student debt. But these figures are a real reflection of recession: huge increases among the over 25s, unprecedented demand for places at big city universities and a focus on subjects that should lead to secure jobs.
Social work, for example, is up by 41 per cent despite a stream of bad publicity and unfilled vacancies all over the country. Meanwhile, the hitherto popular finance degrees are struggling and suddenly no one wants to study building. The idea that students do not take account of future job prospects is looking questionable after these figures.”
