Project Title: Sustainable supply chain management in China
Application deadline: 25th February, 2011

Project description

Sustainability and CSR have become buzz words in the business world. However this is considered a Western concept. MNCs (Multinational Corporations) based in the West have to face ethical issues influenced by indigenous value and institutions when they source from and/or sell their products/services to emerging economies like China and India. Specifically, Western MNCs face a great challenge in ‘how to do some good’ to the local supply chains, local community and influence local policy makers.

First, this study is to explore how indigenous values and institutions inform and shape Western MNCs’ CSR practices in relation to their supply chains in China. In addition, it will explore how these indigenously informed CSR practices fit with local values and are constrained and/or enabled by other network players including their supply chains (customers and suppliers), NGOs and Chinese government. Third, how are these barriers and enablers reflected in MNCs’ HQ and Chinese subsidiaries’ corporate strategy?

These expectations may be achieved through case studies of Western Multinational Corporations with operations in China. We envisage that the findings of the study will have significant theoretical and practical implications to the area of sustainable supply chain management for MNCs.
