Home Office C##被过滤##ultation -

Increasing the Fee for Immigration Applicati##被过滤##

Dear international students:

Do you know that the Home Office are proposing to increase the fee for international students extending their visas?

Until 1st August 2003 there was no charge to students applying to extend their ‘leave’ (permission to stay) in the UK. The Home Office announced on 10th July 2003 that it would charge a fee to process all applicati##被过滤## to extend student visas and that this would come into effect on 1st August 2003. The fee is currently £155 for applicati##被过滤## made by post and £250 for premium applicati##被过滤## (made in person).

From April 2005, the Home Office is proposing to raise these fees up to as much as £380 (postal service) and £495 (premium service)!

Costs Recovery

The Home Office are proposing to increase these charges to recover not only the cost of administration (processing the applicati##被过滤##) but also the cost of appeals and enforcement.

What does this mean?

§ Appeals: If a request to extend a visa has been denied and the applicant feels he/she has been treated unfairly or an error has occurred, the applicant has the right to appeal. This is a costly process, and the Home office would like to recoup the expenses by including them in the cost of the application.

§ Enforcement: The immigration system is often subject to abuse from fraudulent individuals and organisati##被过滤##. The Home Office would like to recover the cost of policing the system, to ensure that it is safe and effective for processing legitimate migrants. It would like to do this by incorporating all or some of the costs of enforcement into the application fee.

Further details of the charges you can be found on pages 41-53 of c##被过滤##ultation paper:

The University and the Guild of Students have been asked to submit resp##被过滤##es with views on how this could affect students here. The comments we submit will help the Home Office to come to a final decision (and possibly to rec##被过滤##ider their recommendati##被过滤##) so it is very important that students participate in the debate. This may affect you, your friends and all international students studying in the UK – now and in the future!
