Economics was once just an abstract concept to me, but it has become increasingly attractive over the past few years as it is something that is so close to our everyday lives. My strong interest in Economics is mainly due to its diversity and because it is complemented by a variety of subjects such as Politics and Philosophy in both understanding and application. I have found it fascinating to study at A level and would really like to broaden and deepen my economic knowledge and investigati##被过滤## at degree level and beyond.
Comprehensive reading in the field of Economics over the last couple of years has given me a sound foundation knowledge of the subject and has kept me aware of current affairs and world events. Zhang Yuyan's work 'Globalisation and China's Development' taught me important and relevant knowledge of neoteric and political economic development history, and improved and developed my elementary understanding of world patterns.
I have realised the effects of other areas as Politics, Philosophy and Religion on economic development and am intrigued by questi##被过滤## such as how international rules are made and carried out, who benefits and also who suffers from globalisation the most. My observati##被过滤## on the effects of the WTO, IMF and the World Bank's rules on global economic developments allow me tounderstand more aspects of politics and ethics inside economic models, especially in the case of dissimilar treatments among developing countries, developed countries and third world countries.
Statements raised by Marx and Engels in 'The Communist Manifesto' about the underlying differences of class structure and social system between capitalism and socialism have strengthened my belief that there is a close and complementary relati##被过滤##hip between Economics and Politics. I have found myself intrigued by philosophical questi##被过滤## and initially read 'Free Will: A Very Short Introduction' followed by J.S. Mill's 'Utilitarianism: For and Against', which made me keen to learn and understand ethics relating to its practical application at university.
My reading on globalisation in 'The Economist' and 'The Financial Times' has widened my knowledge of international trade which I have investigated over the past two years by researching the trade of China after they joined the WTO, a high-speed developing economy. I was actively involved in the 2006 Shanghai Worldwide Hotelex Exhibition as a sales representative, in which I observed how international trade happens in terms of a specific transaction, and I learnt invaluable communication skills from this experience.
Capital markets have been my main interest field over the last year as incorporating applicati##被过滤## of theories acquired in Economics, Politics and Philosophy and forecasting and analysing FX markets taking economics and political events into account is enjoyable and interesting, and I have had some success. Studying Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics has, among other things, taught me modelling techniques, logical analysis and numerical methods which will prepare me for statistical aspects of Economics and more complexities such as 'game theory'.
I was involved with a voluntary organization in a rural mountain area of Guizhou this summer, investigating the social and educational facilities available in this region. Their lack of basic facilities and educational resources shocked me and I am now fund-raising in order to help provide much needed funds and equipment to the school. As Deng ##被过滤## argued in the 1980's, reforms and openness are economically, philosophically and also politically necessary and we cannot let any part of the community close forever.
I am thoroughly looking forward to all the opportunities and challenges that university life will offer me, both academically and socially, and I am prepared to invest myself, my time and all my energies towards a higher achievement.
