Myths About The AUT Action

=20

MYTH: students won't be able to get jobs or funding for future study

FACT: The Association of Graduate Recruiters voted unanimously to ensure

that students any job offers made will still be honoured. All
Universities in the UK are in the same situation, if they don't accept
provisional degrees then the whole system will go into meltdown...it may
be a case of waiting till the final moment

MYTH: Students work is going to waste

FACT: Having spent at least 3 years working hard on your course,

neither the AUT, LUSU nor the University wants to let your degree go to
waste. The action has caused short-term problems but in the long term
all students will graduate with a degree which represents the years of
work you put in. See how the provisional degree plans will help you
below in 5. www.lusu.co.uk/advice/strike

MYTH: Lecturers Are Overpaid Already

FACT: Lecturers have had a 40% decrease in their wages in real terms,
since thirty years ago. In addition they now on average 21 students
instead of the 9 they taught in 1976. This level of reward for the work
they do is unsatisfactory- especially when secondary school teachers are
paid better than lecturers...

2. Status Of The Strike

Currently there are talks between the AUT and UCEA, so both seem willing
to make a way forward.

UCEA (the Employers association resp##被过滤##ible for lecturers pay) are
offering their "best and final offer" of an increase of 10.6% over three
years. The AUT have admitted that their original claim for 23% was a
bargaining position and that they would be satisfied with a real-terms
increase of between 12% and 14%.

3. What Is LUSU And Your JCR Doing?

LUSU are pressuring the University to fully engage in the process with
UCEA, we are communicating your worries to the AUT, sorting out problems
within departments through your course reps (who are coming into their
own & doing a great job- thanks), and Union Council officers are going
round coffee shops & on buses next week informing you of the latest
situation. =20

JCRs are holding college question & answer meetings to inform you of
current issues. So far=20

Furness meeting is Monday 7.30pm in the SCR

L##被过滤##dale Monday 7.30pm in the bar

4. Why Does LUSU Support The AUT?

Your Students' Union wants the best university experience that you can

have. Students and LUSU are stuck in the middle of this dispute, and
since lecturers are the ones delivering our education we thought it
would be best to support them. Either way, what we are most concerned
with is informing you of the facts and fighting for your degrees, we
can't really do anything to resolve the dispute.

5. What Is The University Doing?

The University has agreed to give final year students provisional
degrees. Most students will gain an "unclassified provisional degree"
which means that you have your second year transcript, official proof
that you have completed your final year of study and hopefully a
reference from your department. =20

If you have more than 75% of your total marks exam boards will give you
a "classified provisional degree" such as 2:2, 1st etc. If your
department can make a qualified judgement on your marks even though you
do
